UAE: Ramadan 30 Days, Eid al-Fitr Astronomically Set for April

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

The International Astronomy Center anticipates that Ramadan will span thirty days, culminating in the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday, April 10.

This prediction is based on the sighting of the crescent moon, expected on Monday, April 8, particularly in regions where the moon will be prominent due to its setting before sunset and the conjunction occurring post-sunset.

Countries commencing Ramadan on Monday, March 11, 2024, will likely witness the Eid crescent on Monday, April 8. Conversely, nations initiating Ramadan on Tuesday, March 12, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and others, anticipate sighting the crescent for Eid on Tuesday, April 9, corresponding to the twentieth day of Ramadan.

The center forecasts that the crescent moon will be visible on Tuesday, April 9, through telescopes in certain regions of the Eastern World and South Africa. Meanwhile, in Central Asia and Latin America, observing the crescent with the naked eye may prove challenging, with easier visibility expected in Western Asia and parts of the Americas.

Most of these countries are expected to confirm the crescent sighting on Tuesday, making Wednesday, April 10, the official Eid al-Fitr. However, there is a possibility that India and Bangladesh may declare Thursday, April 11, as Eid al-Fitr if the crescent sighting is not confirmed on Tuesday.

Detailed information regarding the crescent observation results can be accessed via the website of the Islamic Crescent Observation Project, affiliated with the International Science Center. The project, initiated in 1998, engages over 1,500 scientists globally to observe and calculate crescent moons. It encourages widespread participation in crescent moon observation, disseminating verified results through its website to promote accurate determination of significant religious events.
