The inauguration of a new Church of South India (CSI) parish facility marks a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi, the first of its kind in the region.
Scheduled for a soft opening ceremony on Sunday, the church, situated adjacent to the BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Mureikha, occupies a 4.37-acre plot generously donated by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Leading the inauguration ceremony will be Rt. Rev. Dr. Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian, the Bishop of Madhya Kerala Diocese of the CSI, followed by a Thanksgiving meeting. The church expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from the UAE leadership since its inception in 1979, highlighting the nurturing environment for religious diversity fostered in the country.
With a membership of approximately 4 million, CSI stands as India’s second-largest Christian denomination. In Abu Dhabi, CSI services have historically been conducted at St. Andrew’s Church. However, the construction of this new church building signifies a dedicated space for followers in the capital to congregate and engage in worship.
Noteworthy is the distinctive architectural design of the new church, characterized by earthy tones and an octagon shape. Its front elevation, reminiscent of angel wings, symbolizes protection and divine presence. Rev. Lalji M. Philip, Vicar of the Parish, emphasized the church's commitment to serving the community with love and dedication.
Attendance at the Sunday ceremony is strictly by invitation and entry passes, while an online broadcast allows well-wishers and followers to participate remotely. Regular services, open to all, commence on May 5, extending the invitation for all to experience the spiritual offerings of the new CSI Parish in Abu Dhabi.
