Meanwhile, the world's largest and most sophisticated power cable-laying vessel has commenced operations in the strategic project of "ADNOC" and the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company "TAQA". Its purpose is to provide environmentally friendly energy to support the production activities of "ADNOC's" offshore fields, thereby reducing carbon emissions. The project is estimated to cost 13.95% of the total investment. A sum of one billion dirhams, equivalent to $3.8 billion.
This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, seeks to establish and manage a high-voltage direct electricity transmission system beneath the sea. The primary objective is to provide ADNOC's offshore fields with cleaner and more efficient energy by connecting them to the Abu Dhabi onshore electricity grid, which is under ADNOC's operation. Abu Dhabi Transmission and Control Company (TRANSCO) is a company that is completely controlled by TAQA.
The project necessitates the installation of around 1,000 kilometers of high-voltage direct current cables, which also incorporate optical fibers. The power transmission system has a total installed capacity of 3.2 gigawatts, which comprises of two subsea connections and two separate high-voltage direct current conversion units.
The cable-laying vessel "Leonardo Da Vinci", operated by the "Prysmian" group, has arrived in the UAE from Europe to commence its four-month-long project. Initially, the vessel will operate within the marine area situated between the port on the western coast of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the upper and lower "Zakum" marine fields. This distance is equivalent to the span between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
