Canada: Electricity Price Increase in Quebec, Effective April 1

Asma Ahmed - | World

Starting on Monday, the first of April, the upcoming yearly increase in residential electricity rates, which has been settled at 3%, is expected to be enforced throughout Quebec.

The impending annual hike in residential electricity rates, standing at 3%, is poised to take effect this Monday across Quebec. As outlined by Hydro-Quebec, this routine adjustment will translate into increased monthly electricity expenditures for households, with anticipated rises of $2.35 for smaller homes, $4.39 for residences spanning 111 square meters, $5.82 for those measuring 158 square meters, and $7.17 for larger properties covering 207 square meters.

In February 2023, the Quebec National Assembly passed Bill 2, enacting a cap on Hydro-Quebec's residential distribution tariffs, thereby restricting any potential increase to a maximum of three percent.

The escalation in electricity prices extends beyond residential consumers, with businesses facing a parallel increase of 5.1 percent in rates. Hydro-Quebec has attributed this rise to corresponding fluctuations in Quebec's consumer price index observed between September 30, 2022, and September 30, 2023.

Furthermore, it's important to note that this adjustment encompasses all business electricity tariffs, excluding large-scale industrial energy rates, which are slated to climb by 3.3 percent in line with the regulatory amendments. These developments signify broader implications for both residential and commercial consumers, potentially prompting adjustments in budgeting and consumption patterns.

The impending electricity price hike in Quebec carries significant implications for both residential and commercial consumers. Beyond the economic impact, it underscores broader societal issues and the need for ongoing dialogue and action to address them.
