URGENT.. UN Rejects "Immediate Ceasefire" Resolution Amid Gaza Conflict Pressure

Asma Ahmed - | World

The Israeli government is under increasing pressure from Washington and other allies due to Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

The United Nations Security Council deliberated on a proposal proposing an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza on Friday, March 22, 2024. The United States was the proposer of the resolution, which received eleven affirmative votes. But in the end, Russia and China rejected it, so it never passed.

Washington's submission of the resolution for a vote underscored the urgency of halting the conflict, framing it as a crucial step toward facilitating a broader resolution. This move followed previous instances in which the United States employed its veto power to block ceasefire resolutions, highlighting the persistent efforts to address the ongoing crisis.

The arrival of U.S. Secretary of State Blinken in Tel Aviv marked a pivotal moment, coinciding with intensified diplomatic engagement following talks in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Blinken immediately commenced discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, signaling a concerted effort to address the escalating situation. The mounting pressure on the Israeli leader from Washington and other key allies underscores the gravity of the conflict and the imperative of finding a resolution.

Meanwhile, Israel persisted with military operations in and around Al Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in Gaza. With many hospitals in the besieged territory no longer functioning, the continued military activity poses significant challenges for civilians and exacerbates the humanitarian crisis. Despite international calls for restraint, Israel's resolve to press forward with its military campaign remains steadfast.

The United States, a staunch supporter of Israel, has increasingly voiced concerns about the toll of the prolonged conflict on civilians in Gaza. As a major provider of military assistance to Israel, the U.S. plays a pivotal role in shaping the dynamics of the conflict and exerting influence on Israeli policy.

Israel's determination to extend its military operations to Gaza's southernmost point, Rafah, adds another layer of complexity to the situation. With much of Gaza's population seeking refuge along the Egyptian border, the prospect of further military escalation raises alarm and underscores the urgent need for international intervention to mitigate the humanitarian fallout of the conflict.
