Urgent.. Syrian President is invited to climate conference by UAE

Ahmed Moawad - | Arab News

The United Arab Emirates extended an invitation to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to participate in the upcoming United Nations climate conference, COP 28.

And the Syrian News Agency "SANA" reported on Sunday that the invitation was delivered to the Syrian President by the Chargé d'Affaires of the UAE Embassy in Damascus, Abdul Hakim Al-Nuaimi, who presented a "official invitation from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, to attend the Conference of the Climate Parties, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates." The dates for the event are set for November and December.

According to the Syrian News Agency, Al-Assad met with the Chargé d'Affaires of the UAE Embassy in Damascus, Abdul Hakim Al-Nuaimi, yesterday and got an official invitation from UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Syria has been invited to attend the League of Arab States' meetings in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on the 19th of this month in light of the country's recent readmission to the organisation.

More than ten years after suspending Damascus' membership for its violent response to the protests, which escalated into a bloody conflict that killed half a million people and displaced half the population inside and outside the country, the League of Arab States decided on May 7 to resume the participation of Syrian government delegations in its meetings.

After the UAE reestablished ties with the Syrian regime months ago, Saudi Arabia was the last Arab country to do so more recently.

It's worth mentioning that Saudi Arabia extended an official invitation to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to attend the Arab summit being held in Jeddah this week, marking the first time he's been invited to attend an Arab summit since the conflict began.

In March of 2023, President Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates met with President Bashar Al-Asad of Syria in Abu Dhabi to explore methods for maintaining peace in the region.

Sheikh Mohammed tweeted, "I received Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Emirates today, and we held constructive talks aimed at developing relations between our two countries." The Syrian president was accompanied on his trip to the UAE by his wife, Asma al-Assad.

We talked about how to work together better to hasten peace and development in Syria and the surrounding area.
